Culture & history of the area
The Aquitaine region of France can genuinely claim to be all things to all men: beaches, lakes, forests, mountains, vineyards, picturesque villages, vibrant towns & authentic rural France. Even the French come here for the abundance of restaurants offering traditional recipes in unpretentious surroundings.
Ever since the 12th century when Eleanor of Aquitaine divorced Louis VII to marry Henry II, the history of the area has been intertwined with our own. The hundred year war, the reign of Henry IV, and even a confrontation between Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington have left their indelible mark on the region. Castles and battlefields are obvious legacies, but more subtle influences also remain, such as the oldest golf course on mainland Europe (Pau) and a passion for rugby not found elsewhere in France.
